Comfortably on target to hit 6000km for the year until I had to stop to sort the house out in November. Again.

I went full Euro in 2016 and converted to Kilometres.

2 road races and got spat in both. Maybe something to work on this year. Maybe.

Got on with Veteran XC racing and got hammered at Whinlatter and performed a bit better at Dalby. Missed the next 2 of the series and gave up on it for the year.

Onto the main racing target of the season and Clay Bank Hill Climb. Didn’t hit the target but happy enough with progress. Died a thousand deaths up Carlton in the afternoon including having to track stand behind a car.

Sub 8 minutes.

2016 Hill Climb Season Part 1 – Clay Bank (am)

The main event. My main focus for the year – going sub 7 minutes official race time for this climb.

Bike of choice – GTR

Aero tweeks – Cap worn backwards and no helmet. Legs and head not hairy.

Weight saving – Bottle cages and bolts removed. One latex tube as the other didn’t play well with the old tyre. Worn tyres to save weight and they are faster apparently but I can’t find the link at the moment.

Tyre pressure – 120psi

Nutritional supplement – A gel at 15 minutes to go.

Weight Change since last year – +0.8lbs

Weather – Slight tailwind generally damp road surface.

Result? – Failure. Not a suprise after the evening series but in reality a big win as I knocked 18 seconds off my PB and 22 seconds off last years time. Wind direction was at it’s optimum but only light. The main difference over last year was I didn’t tail off in the final third of the climb but kept a good cadence in a higher gear and drove at the line to the point of not being able to see straight. Gearing went mostly to plan with a short stint dropping back down a cog to keep the cadence high.

Conclusion – The rather obvious need to be able to push a bigger gear at the same cadence up the main body of the climb :0)

Oh and less weight and more power.

Wheelers Hill Climb 3

Round three of the Cleveland Wheelers mini hill climb series and I’m not particularly feeling it tonight. Steady on the flat with the benefit of the tailwind then suffering one cog up from last week.

Bike of choice – GTR

Aero tweeks – Cap worn backwards and no helmet. Legs and head not hairy.

Weight saving – Water bottle off. Saddle bag removed but bottle cages left in position. Tiny rear light fitted.

Tyre pressure – Around 85psi.

Nutritional supplement – A gel at 15 minutes to go.

Weight Change since last year – +1.8lbs

Other – New tyres as the old rear was practically worn out. Now used tyres are supposedly faster so saving them for the Open event.

Weather – Tailwind to start and a headwind on the lower slopes.

Result? – Slower than the week before. Wind was less favourable but not by a lot. Tried to go a bit easier on the flatter bit and push a bigger gear all the way to the top. Didn’t wreck myself in the sprint. I payed for the bigger gear on the initial ramp which left me floundering a bit before the sprint but I was gaining time back on my PB in the middle of the climb.

Bumper entry and slowest of the series so far.

An even longer way to go to get my target time though. Anybody got some silly light wheels…

As I didn’t make it to the final 4th round conclusions from this mini series for the open event are – Try a bit harder on the flat bit. As soon as the slope bites drop it to a lower gear I can spin then back up to the larger gear of tonight as it slackens slightly. “Sprint” fromĀ  before wherever I feel I can maintain forward momentum to the finish. Removing the last bit of excess weight and installing the old tyres with my new latex tubes and setting the pressures high.
